The Story

Nominated for best play for the 2022 Tony Awards, The Minutes is a biting political satire infused with dark humor, offering a sharp, humorous, and timely critique of power dynamics, political corruption, and the manipulation of history. Set during a council meeting in the small, fictional town of Big Cherry, a group of local politicians and officials convenes to address seemingly routine, mundane matters. As the meeting unfolds, however, unexpected and unsettling truths about the town’s past and the people in charge begin to surface. With Pulitzer Prize-winning Letts’ signature mix of sharp humor and mounting tension, The Minutes delivers an urgent and engaging reflection on how even the smallest political systems reflect and influence larger power structures.

The Reason

MALINDA L. BECKHAM, ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

WHY THIS PLAY?

We offer this play because it delivers a sharp, timely critique of power dynamics, political corruption, and the manipulation of history—issues that are more relevant than ever in today’s social and political climate. Letts’ biting humor and escalating tension creates an experience that draws audiences into a thought-provoking exploration of truth and accountability, something we have really committed ourselves to.

WHY NOW?

As societies grapple with the complexities of leadership, misinformation, and the structures that shape our world, The Minutes offers an urgent and engaging reflection on how even the smallest political systems reflect and influence larger power structures. The play invites audiences to question who gets to control the narrative and at what cost.

Moreover, its darkly comedic tone and razor-sharp writing make it a theatrical experience that is both intellectually stimulating and entertaining, offering a balance of insight and intrigue. Producing The Minutes now not only sparks important conversations, but it also provides a platform for critical dialogue about power, truth, and the roles we all play in shaping the world around us.
